Ancient Egypt is often associated with magnificent pyramids, powerful pharaohs, and mysterious hieroglyphics. However, another fascinating aspect of this ancient civilization is their diet. The ancient Egyptians predominantly relied on a plant-based diet due to the availability of a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes along the Nile River.

Veganism in ancient Egypt was not necessarily a choice based on ethical reasons, but rather out of necessity and practicality. Meat was a luxury reserved for the elite and was not consumed on a daily basis by the majority of the population. Instead, the ancient Egyptians incorporated a wide array of plant-based foods into their diet, including figs, dates, onions, garlic, lentils, chickpeas, barley, and wheat. One of the most well-known vegan dishes from ancient Egypt is koshari, a hearty and nutritious meal made with rice, lentils, chickpeas, and caramelized onions, topped with a tangy tomato sauce. This dish is still popular in Egypt today and is enjoyed by vegans and non-vegans alike. In addition to koshari, the ancient Egyptians also enjoyed a variety of bread made from wheat and barley, as well as fruits such as figs, dates, and pomegranates. They would sweeten their meals with honey or dried fruits, avoiding the use of refined sugar. Despite the lack of modern amenities and technology, the ancient Egyptians were able to maintain a healthy and balanced vegan diet that sustained their civilization for thousands of years. Their plant-based diet not only nourished their bodies but also played a significant role in their cultural and religious beliefs. Today, veganism is becoming increasingly popular in Egypt and around the world, with more people choosing to adopt a plant-based lifestyle for health, environmental, and ethical reasons. By looking back at the ancient Egyptians and their plant-based diet, we can learn valuable lessons about the benefits of incorporating more fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes into our own modern diets.
