Las Vegas is known for its vibrant nightlife, luxurious casinos, and world-class entertainment. However, many people may not be aware that the area surrounding Las Vegas is rich in history, particularly in terms of ancient civilizations that once inhabited the region.

One of the ancient civilizations that called the Las Vegas area home were the Ancestral Puebloans, also known as the Anasazi. These Native American people lived in the region from around 200 to 1150 AD and left behind a rich legacy of cliff dwellings, petroglyphs, and pottery. Some of the most well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan sites can be found at nearby destinations like Valley of Fire State Park and the Lost City Museum. Another ancient civilization that left its mark on the Las Vegas area were the Mojave people. The Mojave inhabited the region along the Colorado River and were known for their intricate rock art, which can still be seen at places like Grapevine Canyon. The Mojave were skilled farmers, growing crops like corn, beans, and squash in the arid desert environment. In addition to the Ancestral Puebloans and the Mojave, other ancient civilizations that lived in the Las Vegas area include the Southern Paiute and the Hohokam. These indigenous peoples thrived in the harsh desert environment through their knowledge of the land and their adaptation to the challenges of living in a dry climate. Today, visitors to Las Vegas can learn more about these ancient civilizations through museums, archaeological sites, and guided tours. Exploring the history of the region provides a deeper appreciation for the cultural diversity and resilience of the people who called this area home long before the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip illuminated the desert sky.
